The Works and Life of Vincent Van Gogh: Tribulations and Triumph

These lectures will consider Van Gogh’s biography, major works, significant influences on his artistic development (Japanese prints and the Impressionists, for example), and the greater context surrounding his life, including important individuals such as his brother Theo, and the contemporary artist, Paul Gauguin.

Lecture 3 – October 18, 2PM
Painting the Fields of Auvers and Death at 37

• • From May to July 1890, Van Gogh produced 70 paintings in about as many days in Auvers-sur-Oise north of Paris, including the iconic Wheatfield with Crows. In addition to an examination of his last works, the controversy surrounding the circumstances of his death (suicide or accidental shooting?) and his legacy will be addressed.
