This three-part lecture series will explore works in the Museum’s Permanent Collection and the influences of Impressionism and Japonisme within the collection and on the art world.
October 3 – The Influence of Impressionism in the Cummer Collection, Part I Examine the controversial and revolutionary movement pioneered by Monet and Renoir as its influences spread to America in the works of Hassam, Metcalf, and Twachtman, among others.
October 10 – The Influence of Impressionism in the Cummer Collection, Part II Impressionist artists were extremely diverse in their approaches to painting, as seen in the emphasis on the human figure by Cassatt and Degas. This talk will explore works by Frieseke, Pissarro, and Renoir against the backdrop of the eight Impressionist exhibitions held in Paris between 1874 and 1886.
October 17 – Japonisme – The Influence of Japanese Art Japanese art and culture were wildly popular in Europe in the late 19th century, influencing artists like Manet, Monet, Degas, and Van Gogh. In the Museum’s collection, de Jonghe’s Japanese Fan reflects the admiration for all things Japanese. A brief preview of the upcoming exhibition Tattoos in Japanese Prints from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (October 27, 2023 through January 14, 2024) will also be included.
