Romanticism, Realism and the Beginnings of Modern Art – This presentation will consider the drama of Romanticism in paintings by Delacroix and Goya, the advent of realism seen in the works of Courbet, and the increasing challenges to academic precepts in the canvases of Manet. The Cummer’s examples from this time period reflect the increasing importance of landscape as a genre including works by Paul Camille Guigou, Henri-Joseph Harpignies and Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot.
