Join photographers Bob Self and Malcolm Jackson along with the Executive Director of the A. L. Lewis Museum at American Beach, Carol Alexander, for a thoughtful conversation exploring the history, cultural significance, and enduring legacy of American Beach. 

Through photography, storytelling, and personal reflection, the panel will examine how this historic coastal community connects to larger national narratives around land, leisure, resilience, and Black history in America. Bob Self will share the story behind his photographic work and new book, offering insight into both his artistic process and the relationships and moments that shaped the project. 

The conversation will also highlight the importance of preserving the stories, landscapes, and cultural memory of American Beach, from its original 33-acre purchase to its continuing significance today. You will leave with a deeper appreciation for how photography can document place, honor lived experiences, and strengthen connections between past and present.
